Current Projects - Vanishing Villa - Nyambu, Tabanan - Bali
A modern villa situated at Nyambu - Tabanan, Bali. A very traditional Balinese village overlooking a small river below. The clients brief was to design an interesting modern villa that would not dominate the landscape as there is a Balinese family temple adjacent.
The solution found was to cut the main living/dining building adjacent to the temple into the cliff face making the flat concrete roof the same level as the temple ground and grassing it.

GENERAL COMMENTS ON THE DESIGN
- This modern villa is set in a traditional Balinese Village.
- The wooden site is flat on approach but at its west end looks down a very steep ravine to a fast flowing creek below.
- Vanishing Villa is so named as it is not apparent when first approached from its entrance as the villas living spaces / swimming pool are cut into the steep hillside creating a roof that is grassed and is a continuation of the level site behind it.
- Contrary to many other villa landscapes in Bali the site was left in its natural setting of Binkarai trees and grassland.
- Another important consideration for "Vanishing Villa" was the diversion of the natural ground water from the extensive rice fields behind the site that naturally gravitates to the creek below.
- An extensive ground water drainage system was designed to take away the ground water down to the creek below without any structural damage to the villa.
- The grass / sod roof to the living area insulates the villa and the large sliding doors allow cooling breezes to flow through the building.
